Vortex

A vortex from Black and white

Vortexes are portals summoned by gods, as a means of traveling between lands.

To progress the game, the player must complete gold story scrolls, which will eventually open a vortex to the next land.

When a vortex is open, a gold story scroll can be seen above it. Clicking it will take the player and their creature through. Before that the player should put anything they want to take to the next land into the vortex, such as resources (food, wood, livestock, etc), followers, one-shot miracles, artifacts, creature toys, and scaffolds.

Anything that gets near the vortex will get sucked into it (except creatures), and may come out on the other side. Although there is no limit to what can be put in, there is a limit of 1000 objects that can come out the other side. Wood and food stacks will split into multiple stacks when dropped, but can go through as a single stack if thrown at the vortex.

Trivia[]

  • If the game has been running for a while it is more likely to crash when the player tries to go through a vortex. Saving and restarting the game before clicking the scroll can prevent this.
  • Scaffolds technically belong to a specific village, not a village type. So scaffolds made by the first village on a land will always belong to the first village on any land. So, for example, you cant make a Norse village in Land 3 by making scaffolds in Land 2 and putting them in the vortex, because they will belong to one of the villages on Land 3 and none of them are Norse.
  • The villagers from the Egyptian village on Land 3 can be tricked into the vortex by placing a teleport next it, another next to the temple, and raising their totem.
  • Similarly, if there are only 2 teleports, villagers dropped on one come out the other. This can save having to go back and forth to put a bunch of villagers in the vortex.
  • Or, if there's a village close enough to the vortex, placing a scaffold near enough will get the builders sucked in a few at a time. (The edge of a village can be extended by building at the edge.)
  • Putting trees in the vortex isn't very useful since they lose their roots before you can plant them, and they usually don't provide much wood.
  • When quest actors go in the vortex, the quest script may see that as them being killed. A good example is when you put the Hermit into the vortex Whitey will scold you.
  • Quest actors put into the vortex will appear in the next land as normal villagers, but having their unique skin, including: Sable, Pied Piper, Hermit, Explorers, Hippie, or Khazar's Craftsman.
  • Nemesis appears to throw fireballs through a vortex, on Land 2 when he arrives to kill Khazar.
  • The volcano on Land 5 is technically a modified vortex that can't be traveled through since it has no scroll, but pressing F1 while pointing at it gives the same message as with the others.
  • Through the course of the game, the player character is the only god unable to summon vortexes:
    • Khazar opens the vortex to Land 2, to save the player from Nemesis' wrath.
    • Nemesis opens a vortex to Land 2 to destroy Khazar, and another one to Land 5, to invite the player to the final duel.
    • Lethys escapes through a vortex to Land 3, and opens the vortex to Land 4, after he is defeated.
